Bird watching - more
information
Galu, away from the maddening crowds is an unspoilt 4
1/2 km pristine beach. Nestled among the forest is Pinewood Village Beach
Resort, offering the birdwatcher the delight of a huge variety of birds
rarely seen at the Kenya Coast.
The numbers of birds seen continue to increase and with
records now supplied by guests during the year, we have a record number
of 150 species. Not all these are of course present all the time or all
together, but a reasonably diligent amateur as most of us are should record
80 species.
This in a week's stay at Pinewood or slightly more with
a little bit of searching making Galu one of the premier spots on the Kenya
Coast for the birdwatcher !
Our birdlist is now registered at the Department of Ornithology
in Nairobi and is updated each year. Any and all the information and new
sightings by guests is gladly welcomed and appreciated. If you would like
a copy please go
here.
All birds listed have been recorded within walking distance
fo Pinewood Village Palaearctic migrants and intra Africa migrants inevitably
increase the total number of species in the area that may otherwise be
normally expected.
The obervance ( R. Cahill, Nairobi ) of solitary Oystercatcher
in 1994 is a rare occurence on the Kenya coast - to be expected now more
often !
Equally, the very large flocks, several thousand in total,
of migrant White winged black terns on the rocks to the south of
Pinewood at low tide, normally of a more inland species, is also noteworthy.
