Pinewood village "off the beat" options.
See our watersports section.
Off the coast of Kenya in our area there are two main
sites which regularly produce excellent results.
One of these site is adjacent to the coral reef
which stretches south from Mombasa to just past us enroute to Chale Island
some 13 Km away. On the outside of this reef boats troll for Kingfish,
Dorado and Skipjack tuna, perhaps coming across a Sailfish sunning or "finning"
on the water nearby. Being adjacent to the reef palatable fish may also
be caught - the local Kole Kole for example being an excellent eating fish.
Most fishing in this area is done by way of trolling
artificial lures behind the ocean going boat - perhaps up to five lines
in water at any one time. Fresh bait is also used for the larger quarry.
This quarry is perhaps best sought after a little
further south than us but easily reachable for a days outing on the ocean.
That is the waters off Chale Island and out into the Pemba Channel proper
- a stretch of water that lies between the coast of Kenya and the islands
of Pemba and Zanzibar.
These waters are prolific - baitfish often seen
in large swirling masses on the surface as they feed, and hopefully larger
fish below them. Amongst the larger fish in this area are several different
species of shark such as the Hammerhead, the Mako, the Tiger. These stretches
of water are however more renowned for the several species of Billfish
- the anglers dream. Amongst them are Striped Marlin, Blue and Black Marlin
and of course sailfish. Recent times have seen the occasional Spearfish
too.
Night fishing for Broadbill is also possible.
